Using Copyleaks: A Guide for Students

Copyleaks is a tool integrated into MyCourses (D2L) and Canvas to help maintain academic integrity by checking assignments for originality. This guide provides information on how to use Copyleaks, including helpful links and frequently asked questions.

How to Submit an Assignment

  • In Canvas
Assignments set up with Copyleaks can be submitted like any other Canvas assignment. Once submitted, Copyleaks scans your work for plagiarism and generates an originality report.
    Step-by-Step Submission Guide for Canvas

  • In MyCourses (D2L)
Students access Copyleaks assignments by clicking on them in the modules. Note: They will not show up under Submissions/Dropboxes, since they are not dropboxes.  and results will appear after submission.

Viewing the Copyleaks Originality Reports

After submission, Copyleaks generates a detailed originality report that highlights:

  • Text matches to other sources.
  • Percentage of originality and similarity.
  • Links to matched sources.

Canvas:

In Canvas, there are two ways to access the Copyleaks originality report after submitting the assignment:

  1. In the assignment submission screen, locate the text that says NEXT UP: Review Feedback and click on the percentage to the right of NEXT UP: Review Feedback to open the report.
  2. In your course, click Grades, locate the assignment, and click on the percentage in the right of the column.

Use this report to review your work and ensure proper citation practices. For more details, refer to the Canvas Student Guide.

D2L/MyCourses:

In D2L, you can view the Copyleaks Originality Report by

1. Navigating to the appropriate module.

2. Selecting the Copyleaks-enabled assignment.

3. Scrolling down to the Your Submissions area and clicking on the arrows next to the AI detector score percentage and/or the Plagiarism score.

Can't view the Copyleaks Originality Report?

If there is no percentage:

  1. Reach out to your instructor and ask if they have the assignment enabled for students to see the similarity report. Instructors may not allow students to see the report. They also may set it up so students can't see the report until after the due date, or after the assignment is graded.
  2. If you've confirmed with your instructor that you should see the similarity report and you don't, save a copy of the document with a new filename, and resubmit. This is a known error when there is an issue with the document you submitted (for instance, if it's corrupted).

9. D2L only: I went to Submissions -> Dropboxes and I can't find the dropbox to hand in my CopyLeaks assignment. What do I do?
In D2L, CopyLeaks-enabled assignments are located inside the modules for the course. Go to the modules, and click on the assignment inside the modules in order to submit. In D2L, CopyLeaks assignments do not appear inside the Submissions/Dropboxes section.

10. D2L only: My instructor reopened the assignment for me but I can't hand it in! There is no Submit Your Work button.

If your instructor grades your assignment (with a zero, for example, because it's missing), you cannot submit. The Submit Your Answers button disappears. When you try, you'll see a dialog box that says: "Assignment is graded: Please note that after grading the assignment, you will not be able to submit any files."

Please ask your instructor to remove the grade of zero so the system will allow you to hand in the assignment. Once the grade is removed, the Submit Your Answers button will reappear.

For example:

Dear Instructor,

Thank you for allowing me to submit the _______ assignment. Please remove the grade of zero from the Copyleaks assignment (not the MyCourses gradebook) so the Submit Your Answers button will appear and allow me to submit the assignment.

11. Why does it say I have no more attempts? How do attempts work when submitting assingnments that run through Copyleaks?

In D2L/MyCourses:

Students have between 1-10 attempts for each assignment, depending on the number of attempts instructors set when creating the assignment.

Students can delete or replace the documents they submitted in the Your Submissions screen, but deleting or replacing does not reset the number of attempts. For example, if 3 attempts are allowed, and a student submits 3 times, the student is out of attempts and the Submit Your Answers button disappears. Even if the student later deletes those attempts, she's still out of attempts and unable to submit. The same is true for replacing. Students can only submit again (via replacing the document) if they have at least one attempt left before they start deleting and replacing.

How students delete/replace submissions in D2L: Assuming you have enough attempts left, and you want to delete or replace a document, this can be accomplished by selecting the ellipses (three vertical dots), then selecting Replace File or Delete Document.

In Canvas:

Students have between 1 attempt and unlimited attempts for each assignment, depending on the number of attempts instructors set when creating the assignment. Students are not able to delete or replace attempts in Canvas.
