Common Issues with Canvas Inbox and JAWS
Tips & Workarounds for JAWS Users
Common Issues with Canvas Inbox + JAWS
- Messages Not Being Read Properly: The message threads may not be announced clearly. Message content may not be automatically read when selected.
- Navigation Problems: JAWS may not properly announce or focus on buttons like 'Reply', 'Archive', or 'Compose'. It’s difficult to know which message is selected or expanded.
- Unread vs. Read Messages: JAWS doesn’t always indicate whether a message is unread, making it hard to prioritize.
- Mislabeling or Missing Landmarks: Canvas Inbox lacks consistent ARIA landmarks and labeling for better screen reader navigation.
Tips & Workarounds for JAWS Users
- Reading Messages: Use Insert+F7 to list headings and links. Then use arrow keys to explore the message body.
- Compose or Reply: Use the Tab key repeatedly after opening Inbox to reach 'Compose' or 'Reply'. JAWS may not announce it clearly, but you can verify by pressing Insert+Tab to hear the focused element.
- Navigating Threads: Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move between message previews and use Enter to open them.
- Identifying Message Status: Unread messages usually appear bold visually, but JAWS may not announce this. Instead, rely on message order or ask your institution's accessibility team for assistance.
- Skip Navigation Problems: Use Insert+Z to turn off virtual cursor temporarily if stuck in keyboard traps.
- Use Canvas Mobile App: Canvas Student/Teacher mobile app is sometimes more accessible with screen readers like VoiceOver (iOS).
Advanced Workaround
If Inbox continues to be problematic, request that your institution enable notifications to email for messages. You can:
- Go to Account > Notifications.
- Set Conversations to notify you immediately via email.
- Reply directly via your email client, which may be easier than navigating the Canvas Inbox.
Report the Issue
Make sure to report the issue to your instructors so they are aware sooner rather than later that you're having issues. Then, submit a ticket to the Technical Support Center so it can be routed to the right department and sent to Instructure (Canvas) directly. Getting more user reports helps prioritize fixes.
