Student Start Guide for a Successful Semester

Welcome to a new semester at St. Petersburg College! Below you'll find the essential information you need to get started and stay on track. Whether you're brand new or returning, this guide is here to help.

1. Accessing Your Courses

Where can I find my courses? All your classes are managed through Canvas. You can access Canvas directly through Titan Hub using the Canvas widget. Log into Titan Hub and click through to Canvas to view your courses, syllabi, and assignments.

When can I view my course? Once your instructor publishes your course, you'll have view-only access to content inside the course. All courses are automatically published the Friday before the course start date, but some faculty may publish them early.

When can I fully participate in my course? Once the course start date has arrived, you'll able to fully participate in the course (e.g., submit assignments, post in discussions, or take quizzes).

Important Note: You must actively participate in each class during the first week of the semester. This means completing an assignment, quiz, or check-in activity as outlined by your instructor. Failure to do so may result in being dropped from the class due to Financial Aid requirements.

2. Communicate with Your Instructors

If you have questions or concerns about a class, your first point of contact should always be your instructor. Refer to your course syllabus for contact information and office hours. Instructors are here to support your success.

3. Barnes & Noble First Day Program

Many St. Petersburg College classes use Barnes & Noble's First Day program. This program provides access to digital course materials on or before the first day of class.

  • The cost is included in your tuition and fees.
  • Materials are accessed directly through Canvas.
  • You must opt out if you do not wish to participate.

For more information, including opt-out instructions, visit this guide on Barnes and Noble First Day

4. Key Student Resources

5. Student Support & Academic Progress

At St. Petersburg College, your success is a top priority. To better support you throughout your course, the college has enhanced how advisors and support teams can assist you.

Academic advisors now have the ability to monitor student progress in Canvas courses. This allows them to stay informed and provide timely guidance if additional support may be helpful.

If your instructor has concerns about your academic progress, they may reach out to your advisor to ensure you receive the support you need to stay on track.

In addition, your instructor may refer you to support services such as tutoring or other academic resources. If a referral is made, a member of that support team may contact you directly to offer assistance.

These efforts are designed to connect you with helpful resources early and often—so you have every opportunity to succeed in your course. Be sure to check your student email.
