What is Notebook?

Canvas Notebook is a note-taking tool that lets you highlight and add notes to text while viewing Canvas Pages.

You can use Notebook to mark important information, identify information you don't understand, and add your own notes.

How to Use Notebook

1. Open a Canvas Page

Open a Canvas Page that contains the course content you want to review.

2. Highlight Text

Select the text you want to save.

Notebook options will appear after you select the text.

You can:

• Mark Important – identify information you want to remember.
• Mark Unclear – identify information you don't understand.
• Add a Note – write your own note about the selected text.

3. Add a Note

Select Add a Note and enter your note.

Your note can be used to:

• Summarize information.
• Write a question.
• Add an example.
• Remind yourself to review something.

4. Open Notebook

Select Notebook from your course navigation to view the notes and highlights you have created.

Use Notebook to review your notes and return to the course content when needed.

Using Notebook to Study

Notebook can be useful when preparing for quizzes, exams, or assignments.

As you work through your course:

• Mark important information.
• Mark confusing information as Unclear.
• Add notes to help you remember key concepts.
• Review your Notebook when studying.

Advanced Details

Notes Are Personal

Notebook is designed for your personal notes and highlights. Your Notebook is not an assignment submission.

If your instructor asks you to submit work, use the Canvas assignment, discussion, quiz, or other activity specified by your instructor.

Notebook Works with Canvas Pages

Notebook is used while viewing supported Canvas Page content. If Notebook options do not appear when you select text, the page may not support Notebook functionality.

FAQ / Troubleshooting

I don't see Notebook in my course.

Notebook availability depends on your institution's Canvas settings. If you do not see Notebook in your course, contact your instructor or Canvas support.

I don't see the Notebook options when I select text.

Notebook options are available on supported Canvas Pages. Make sure you are selecting text on a Canvas Page.

Can I use Notebook to submit an assignment?

No. Notebook is for personal notes and highlights. Submit assignments using the Canvas tool specified by your instructor.

Can I see my notes later?

Yes. Open Notebook from Course Navigation to review your saved notes and highlights.

Can my instructor see my notes?

Notebook is intended for your personal notes and highlights. If your instructor needs you to submit your work, use the appropriate Canvas assignment or activity.
